Hardy CactusZn 5 - 9 May be hardier.
We do not have the exact botanical name for this variety. It originated from Oklahoma and has been thriving in a Zone 5 garden for over a decade. Here it has developed into a huge colony, covered with large, bight yellow blooms in early-to-mid-summer. Pads are distinctly bigger than Opuntia compressa as is the overall plant.
Must be situated in a sunny location with excellent drainage. Sandy soils are best. A gravel mulch around the plant is helpful. Winter wet is deadly.
In the spring the cactus will be dormant and in most cases, look terrible. However, as the weather warms the cactus will plump-up and resume its beautiful, prickly form. Remember that these plants are PRICKLY. Please handle with care and keep away from children and pets.
